Game Scouting Report and Video Breakdown | Desmond Bane: vs. Kansas Jayhawks — 2/8/2020
I’m Kuzey, 19. I’ve been writing about basketball since I was 9. I have been working in Eurosport Turkey for the last 1,5 years. I have written on various sites and magazines before. I’ve been working as a freelance scout for three years. I worked as a consultant. I have interviewed dozens of prospects such as Theo Maledon, Deni Avdija, Henri Drell, Aleksej Pokusevski, Arturs Kurucs, Yves Pons and dozens of notable basketball people such as Luis Scola, Xavi Pascual, Jonathan Givony, Dimitris Itoudis, Joan Plaza, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Derrick Williams. I write an article every day. I live in Turkey, I go to all the Euroleague and Youth League games. MY BIGGEST GOAL IS SCOUTING! Anyway, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and feel free to DM!

Physical
This was one of the matches that Desmon Bane showed that he was physically perfect. Every part of Bane upper body looks full of muscle. His shoulders are wide, stiff and strong. DB’s chest muscle seems not to be much. His arms are not very long but very strong. Especially triceps. I think Desmond’s lower body is not very strong. Sometimes he lost the rhythm during the shot because Bane was unable to transfer energy from his slower body to his upper body due to this lack of power. Feet are fast, but hip is not too fast. Bane athleticism looks smooth. He didn’t show much about explosives.
Offense
He showed how strong his first step was during the match and his soft touches around the basket. Bane showed good things about body coordination on his way to the basket and baseline or perimeter. In the middle of the second half, after the full court dribble on the transition, he used his body balance and went to the basket in a two-second sequence. DB was fast in the open court. Eight minutes before the end of the first half, he ran a full court with an excellent combination of acceleration and speed and found points. His dribble with the ball was good. 40 seconds before the end of the first half, he dribbled the ball, used his burst and passed after dribbling. After the pass, he took the shot position on the left forward and the ball came back to him. As soon as he got the ball, DB hit the three with a solid shooting mechanic. He used the screens very well. In eighth minutes in the first half and eleventh minutes in the second half, he used both on and off-ball screens well and scored or gave key passes multiple times. Two things I was most impressed with about his offensive in this match were his leadership and game focus. With 14:27 minutes remaining until the end of the second half, the ball came to Bane in 23rd seconds in TCU shot clock. Without hesitation, he quickly hit the three. There were also some pass positions like it. His leadership was good. Despite being in off-ball motions in 11 positions, he led his teammates. His mid-range was bad. In the first 20 minutes of the second half, he shot bad shots around the mid-range and made the wrong decisions. He didn’t show much about assists. In the 16th minute of the first half, he played as a read and react passer, except for the pass he threw to his teammate with a good court vision.
Defense
I think Bane showed average performance in defense. DB showed good things in PnR handler defense. Between the thirteenth and seventh minutes of the first half, he perfectly defended the handler. He made this defense with quick hands, BBIQ, body coordination, upper body strength and vertical pop. Desmond showed how quick his hands were eight minutes before the end of the first half. He showed things like this 2:50 minutes before the end of the match and 15 minutes before the end of the first half. In my opinion, Desmond Bane showed good things about off-ball defense in the first half. He read the screens and followed his opponent with good timing and closed his opponent’s shot and pass angles. In doing so he used his wide wingspan. DB wasn’t very good laterally. TCU’s superstar was slow laterally and therefore gave the opponent an easy chance to score in five positions in the second half. As I said, using his body well showed some good things on defense, but I think he showed negative things that should be faster for the tempo at the NBA level.
