Overview
Yam Madar, one of the best under the radar prospects of the 2020 NBA Draft, played his first official match in the 2020–2021 season against Bakken Bears. The talented Israeli guard looks much faster, more confident and more agile compared to the 2019–2020 season. In this game, Madar showed a lot of great flashes on the offensive end but I think that his defensive performances were more good (I know, he had some bad moments in the third-quarter). Because many of the players Madar defends are stronger and faster than him. His ability to stop these players is an important plus of his NBA projection.
Latest physical looks
Madar’s shoulders seem wider. He hasn’t made a big improvement in his hollow chests but looks strong enough not to give spacing to his opponents in face-up possession. Wingspan, arms-length and height look the same. He added impressive strength to the perfect quickness in his lower body. It shows that he works a lot on his legs.
Best three things
- Motor on the defensive end.
- Pass the ball with elite BBIQ.
- Scoring confident.
Worst three things
- Some flashes on forcing the game.
- Last touch problem.
- Some awareness problem.
POINTS
He controls his surroundings very well, makes good use of the angle of the screen and uses the dribble jumper, making a soft hop after the dribble. This is one of the best weapons in his offensive arsenal.
Ah, this is a perfect possession. Against strong defender, he has trouble handling at first, but with his burst, body coordination and quickness, he going to the basket and gives pass. Then he goes to the left corner, takes the ball again and uses a perfect pull-up.
This is my favorite possession about Madar in this game. In transition, he goes left-wing and confidently uses 3-points. I think three things are important here. Madar’s shot pocket was not so solid and his wrists giving that much momentum last season. We also see that Madar’s self-confidence and vertical pop are better here. This is an important sequence.
Nice hesitation.
Look at his shot pocket again. Looking more comfortable with his shot. This is a huge plus!
PASSING
Madar had eight assists in this game and I only got one clip. But here you can see everything. Look. He does deceptive ballhandling with footwork and body coordination. He sees the best gap in the opponent’s defensive geometry and gives a perfect, perfect pass. Timing, court vision and ballhandling. Whoaç
DEFENSE
High-level motor defense. Following his man despite a strong screen. Using his thin but quick frame, pesky, too pesky.
In the second action, his thin physical tools hurt him here, but his quickness, defensive willingness and reaction in the first action are excellent. I think it is a big plus that Madar shows this effort and a little stronger image in these actions.
Full-court peskiness. And look, there is a 16 points difference between Bakken and Hapoel.
Bad Things — Briefly
He showed bad things in only two flashes in the first half of the game. Four minutes and 22 seconds before the end of the second period he made an unnecessary no-look pass. After 10 seconds forced the game and had an air-ball jumper. In the third quarter, every player on his team was bad, but Madar was generally the only one who was willing to do something but yeah, thin frame and lack of “great leader, scorer” ID hurt him here. In three positions lack of soft-touch hurt him but I think his effort was good. He gave Bakken’s quick guards 14 easy points in the second-half.
